JOIN/SUPPORT THE HORSES/FOOD
What Our Herd eats, and what it costs.
On an island, most of a horse's food arrives by boat. Grazing covers part of the diet when the season and the pasture allow. The rest is hay and alfalfa, bought by the bale.

What our herd eats
Three horses. Two large bales every two weeks.
We have nowhere to store hay, so we order two bales at a time rather than three. Two bales paid in advance cost 468 €.

- A year

Without a store, the bales wait outside. When it rains a bale can get wet and spoil, so part of what feeding the horses costs is plastic to cover them. That price will be added here.
Why it went up
20 % more, from September 2026.
The forage is grown on the mainland, in Huesca. In September the grower wrote to say prices would rise by a fifth. Drought and the lack of rain have cut the harvest at source, and the rising cost of fuel weighs on both the mechanised harvest and the transport.
The supplier on the island passed the new prices on from the day they announced them. They also mention restrictions on irrigation.
For the horses, nothing changes in what they need. Only what it costs to give it to them.
