Living-only
Every point is a living-only place.
A herd of at least two horses lives there, and nothing is asked of them. No stables, riding schools or yards where horses are ridden or worked.
A point shows roughly where the place is, never the exact spot, and how many horses live there.
On Ibiza the places are semi-free: the island is very dry, and most of what the horses eat is brought in. We are looking for land big enough for a free place.
There are horses on Ibiza living in ways we would not choose for them. This map is not about them.
Three words
What we mean by them
- Free
- The horse lives according to its nature: it moves, meets others and goes away, without being shut in. The manure stays on the land. Where there are enough trees, no shelter or stable is needed. Depending on the location, part of the food can come from the land itself, so less has to be brought in. At the same time, how much fresh green the horses eat each day has to be watched, and they must not eat green carobs, so sometimes part of the land has to be closed off.
- Semi-free
- A large shared area with real boundaries: fences that keep the horses safe and the neighbours calm. The manure has to be cleared. Shade and shelters let the horses hide from the wind and rain. Almost all of the food comes from outside.
- Living-only
- Nothing is required of them. No work, no lessons, no performance. Anything beyond living happens only if the horse chooses it. Each horse has the right to refuse, and respecting that right is our responsibility.
In every case, a separate, roofed shelter that can be closed is needed: a place where a horse that falls ill can recover alone and in peace.
Kinds of places
What differs is how open the place is.
- Private
- A family with land, who want horses living freely near them. No visitors, no programme.
- Shared
- A place that opens sometimes: to neighbours, to schools, to friends.
- Hosted
- A hotel, finca, rural business or institution with land, such as a hospital, an orphanage or a school, where the people there can spend time near horses without asking anything of them.
- Research
- A place that documents what happens, together with people who study it.
- Pilot
- A new experiment, run like Our Home Can Tigres, where what is learned travels both ways.

Every point on the map is a living-only place.
Some living-only places work with us and take part in the experiment: they offer the experiences and share the results with us. They are called pilots. Each pilot receives the Horse Presence seal, and we call them our partners.

What it would mean
Over time, places could know about each other. Knowledge could move between them. Horses could have more options than the one place they happen to be. And the island could begin to answer a question it has never been asked.
Where do the horses live?
An open invitation
To horse owners, organisations, landowners, facilitators, researchers, and people already doing interesting work here. We are not arriving to correct anyone. We want to find what already exists, connect it, learn from it and document it.
If you have land, horses, or both, and wonder what this could look like where you are, we would like to hear from you. INvisible IBIZA advises on how such places can work and sustain themselves, based on what Our Home Can Tigres learns.
